The Best Skin Care Routine For Oily Skin

Have you ever been out all night with friends then you look in a mirror only to find out your face is shinier than Rudolph’s nose on Christmas eve? Yeah same, you are definitely not alone. Most people are plagued by unflattering skin conditions and oily skin is a very common one. While there are no simple cures in this world there are definitely steps you can take to reduce the oil your skin is producing.  

Our bodies are so delicate and very easily thrown off balance. One of our skin’s biggest jobs is to keep itself moisturized by releasing a natural oil called sebum from glands in our skin. These glands can freak out and start producing way more oil than we need. This over production of oil causes irritation, infection, and inflammation which leads to a pesky little thing called acne. 

Did you know oily skin can be beneficial in some ways? According to the American Academy of Dermatology  “Oil helps preserve the skin, and people with oily skin tend to have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles.” The secret to healthy skin when your skin is too oily is to find a routine that keeps your natural oils intact and the excess oil to a minimum. This is what your routine should look like:  

Wash your face every morning and night with a gentle Skin Cleanser NOT Soap 

  1. A lot of people tend to use regular soap on their faces, this is definitely not recommended unless you have special circumstances where it’s the only thing you KNOW works on your face. Soap is really harsh on our faces and can make your skin very dry, this is bad news for oily skin since it will make your skin think it needs to produce more oil.
  2. Remember to wash your face at night especially, dirt and oil build up even if you’re not wearing makeup.  
  3. A gentle face wash that my dermatologist recommended is the Cetaphil PRO oil removing foam wash.  

A light facial scrub once a week

  1. You’re going to want to clear those clogged pores every once in a while for overall healthy skin.
  2. Try not to overdo it with scrubbing your face as it can cause irritation!  
  3. Some great facial scrubs I love are  GLAMGLOW 
    TROPICAL CLEANSER Daily Exfoliating Cleanser
     and the Olehenriksen Transforming Walnut Scrub. 

Toner every day

  1. You will notice an extreme difference when you start using toners. They leave your face feeling amazingly clean and help prevent breakouts. 
  2. You’re going to want to be careful with toners as they can dry out your skin so you’re going to want to use sparingly and follow the entire routine.  (Remember dry skin isn’t the answer)
  3.  Neutrogena Clear pore oil eliminating astringent is my absolute favorite toner, I don’t use anything else. 

Face Mask two to three times a week 

I’m very into face masks right now, it’s something you will see used by a lot of Instagram models. You don’t necessarily need expensive masks, it’s all about looking for ones that are targeting towards your skin needs. I don’t have a particular brand that I would recommend but I do love sheet masks.  

Moisturizer every morning and night!

  1. I know it can feel so wrong to put moisturizer on oily skin but some of the best advice you’ll ever receive about oily skin is to keep it moisturized. Our natural reaction might be that we need to “dry up” our skin but that will cause even oilier skin!  Switching to a light weight moisturizer or serum actually tells those sebaceous glands that your skin is good on oil and that it doesn’t need to produce more. 
  2. My favorite moisturizer for oily skin is the Shea Moisture African Black Soap balancing moisturizer.  It is very dry to the touch and doesn’t leave you feeling “greasy”. I get especially oily when I put on makeup, a lot of moisturizers tend to make me look shinier and even cause my makeup to slide off. This is the only one I’ve found that does its job without causing any other problems. 
  3. A great lightweight serum is the Hyaluronic Acid Serum by L’Oreal Paris. Not only is it moisturizing but it keeps my skin looking healthy and plump.  
  4. The L’Oreal serum is a little pricey so if you’re looking for something affordable check out e.l.f Cosmetics Hydrating Booster drops here it’s only $10.00 and can even be mixed into your makeup!  

You can absolutely achieve the healthy skin you’ve always wanted, getting the excess oil under control will not only help your skin clear up, but it will also help your makeup go smoother and last longer. You will feel more confident and less self-conscious now that you have all the information you need, the first step is to arm yourself with the right products.

  1. Toner is life for me and my oil/combo skin. I love using Pixi Beauty’s Glow Tonic in the morning and sheet masks always. Garnier’s Moisture Bomb Sheet Mask is life changing.
